Akismet in 5.x and 6.x

Description

The feature request at http://drupal.org/node/105619 , which currently has the status "patch - code needs review" and the version "4.7.x-1.x-dev, also contains a series of requests and conversation about Akismet in 5.x.

No disrespect to Christoph, who did a marvelous job on the 4.7 request (hence the impatient demand), and has been keeping us posted on the progress for 5.x in the node above, but I have two questions:

On a purely procedural note, wouldn't it be a good idea to start a new request for akismet with trackback in 5.x, just to keep things clear? (Oh. I guess I just did that...)

But more important, is it possible to get the capability in the version of 5.x that gets ported to 6.x, so that those of us who really depend on Christoph's brilliant innovation won't have to go through turning trackbacks off again next time?

It seems like such an important feature. It makes a world of difference on a working site.

Thanks,

Ken

Procedurally, I'd say the 4.7 should be marked "patch (to be ported)" and version changed to 5.x/6.x once the 4.7 code is in. (If following the way core does things, it should actually be implemented in the 6.x version, then backported to 5.x (and 4.7.x).)

Because of this view, I'm really tempted to close this as a duplicate. :)

My problem was that there were lots of requests for 5.x on the 4.7 issue, and the way it was marked made it look like it was nearly completed, when actually nothing has been done there, in over a year, to address the 5.x or 6.x issues.

I don't know if C. is still around, but if he isn't, anyone looking at the old thread title would not get the idea that there were still issues there.

So I would be happy to have this closed as a duplicate--just as long as the way the other thread is marked leads whoever has the skill and the time and inclination to work on the ports to 5.x, etc. to think there's still an issue.

No problem from my point of view.

Thanks,

-Ken

As written in Akismet homepage:

Sept 5, 2008 Update: this module is pretty unsupported at this point. You might want to consider using Mollom.

Shall I close this issue? A Mollom patch is aòready available for 1.x branch, I've also ported it into 2.x branch (not already published)

There is interest in taking over ownership and re-supporting the Akismet module: #417382: Request to take over maintainership/co-maintainership

I added a comment asking if this was going to go forward, as I was curious as well.

There is also a fork project from Akismet that also supports Defensio and TypePad AntiSpam:
