Kaltura Releases Version 1.0 of its Open Source Video Module for Drupal

Kaltura - December 24, 2008 - 14:26

I'm excited to update you that today we have officially launched our open source video module for Drupal. Kaltura's All in One Video Module enables Drupal site-builders to easily add video and rich-media functionalities to their sites. The module handles all aspects of adding video, including full hosting and streaming of content. It is extremely flexible, easy to customize and best of all – it's free – Kaltura covers up to 10GB of hosting and streaming (can later be upgraded). It was designed specifically for Drupal and seamlessly integrates with several key Drupal features and modules, including CCK, Views, cron, tags and taxonomy, and user permissions.

Download it: http://corp.kaltura.com/download
Check it out on our demo site: http://drupal.kaltura.org/
Play around with it: http://drupal.kaltura.org/demo/
Tell us what you think in our forums: http://community.kaltura.org/

Hope you enjoy!

That is a beautiful UI! I would love to use that on my site but I don't want the media hosted elsewhere. :( Maybe Asset can take a lesson from your UI. :)

Arg...wrong comment thread.

Search engine marketing inserted without your knowledge

They've added hidden links, in _kaltura_replace_tags(), with hidden display so you'll never know they're there:

    $hidden_links = '<a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/technology/application_gallery">video platform</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/about">open source video</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/">video tools</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/technology/video_publishing">open source player</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/technology/editing_and_annotation">free video editor</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/solutions/overview">online video platform</a>
      <a href="http://corp.kaltura.com/solutions/overview">free video player</a>';

which is displayed later on with "display:none". Pretty disingenuous.

Latter code

Dave Reid - December 24, 2008 - 15:17

The latter code is:

<div id="'. $div_id .'" class="kaltura_wrapper" style="'. (($comment_div != '')? 'display:none;':'') . $align . $embed_options['custom_style'] .'"'. $embed_options['js_events'] .'>'. $hidden_links .'</div>'. $kaltura_poweredby .'

Simply...unacceptable.

nice xmas pressie

Too bad

Michelle - December 24, 2008 - 17:20

This is such a wonderful UI I was actually going to write up a post asking my users if they would consider switching to it rather than hosting media on our site. But then I see this and I can't trust a company that would do such a dirty trick. What a way to ruin a good thing just for some links.

Kaltura links

Kaltura - December 24, 2008 - 17:34

Thanks for the comments - Kaltura offers an open source module with all of the branding elements that we include in all of our solutions, including these links.

We follow strict guidelines and make sure to include only highly relevant links that do not harm any of our publishers or Kaltura itself. Being open source anyone can remove the links, as well as change any other portion of the code.

Since we do not want to cause any negative feelings in the community (of course!), we have already updated the module, and removed all but one link.

We look forward to the community's continued feedback - it's a huge part of how we develop and further improve on our solutions.

Happy Holidays!

Followup issue to disclose hidden link

Dave Reid - December 24, 2008 - 18:32

While it doesn't change the shady and un-ethical original intent, all but one of the hidden links have been removed. I posted a follow-up issue in the module's issue queue to disclose the current hidden link.

I left a comment on that issue. Dave, I think you should do a write up about the visible links that you have in your modules -- I think it's a great solution.

Updated Module

lishkee - December 26, 2008 - 08:50

Due to some additional internal discussions and feedback from within the community, we have updated the module to allow an opt-out option regarding the links discussed above. Specifically, site-owners will be able to opt-out and remove the links from within the module settings (without having to change any code, as was the case before).

We have left two links that are geared towards promoting the open source video movement and Kaltura's efforts in this area - including the Kaltura Directory of content, the world's largest repository of legally remixable content, which is in the making. Seeing as the links are highly relevant and do not harm any of our publishers or Kaltura itself, we hope that the majority of the community will join us in this effort and leave the links in.

Additional feedback is welcome, of course!

Quite honestly this is the

WorldFallz - December 26, 2008 - 16:11

Quite honestly this is the way it should have been handled from the beginning. It's going to be a bit of hurdle to overcome the initial impression of underhandedness and deceit I'm afraid. ;-(

But kudos for stepping up and fixing the problem.
