Hooray, Drupal.org turns 500,000!

One half meeellion nodes...
Someone out there must have noticed that Drupal.org hit its 500,000th node on June 23, 2009. That's a half million drops in the community pool that makes this project so excellent. The lucky winner is seanr with a module release.
It looks like Drupal.org is ramming through about 1000 posts a day. At this rate plus the exponential growth of this community, there is no telling how soon we'll hit that one million mark. We just crossed the 250,000 node mark 14 months ago. I'll make a suggestion that someone start a pool for the date of the one millionth node.
I'll cast the first vote for Sept 25, 2010. Yeah, that's soon, but mark my words.

Bummer
Some nice admin should change the input filter on this post so it can look like this: http://www.drupaltherapy.com/node/1999

I enabled the documentation input format on the thread and moved it to news and annoucements.
Not 500,000 nodes ...
Sorry to spoil the party ...
It is not 500,000 nodes, just nodes with that nid number.
The reason is that with MySQL replication, the master generates even numbered nids. So we are advancing by 2 and racking up the numbers quickly. That was not the case all the time, but started when replication was in effect.
The actual number of nodes is less than that.
Can some kind soul with shell access give us a SELECT COUNT(*) from node?

Party pooper.
Fine then, I'm just looking at the nid in the URL and the last time that an odd numbered nid draws up a node is 376445 in Feb 2009. So the remaining 123555 is only 1/2 that value in user contributed nodes?
Thats 438222 unique nids. A sum of nodes would not turn up the same value due to deletions.
Then http://drupal.org/node/623556 will be the true half millionth number. That's another 123k nids away. At 1000 nid/day, we'll hit that on October 25, 2009, and celebrate again.
Not too shabby...
So far so good. I counted up to NID 605024, which is only a short hop from the actual 500,000 (half millionth) node on Drupal.org. My bet stands firm for NID 623556 falling on October 25.
If I win, I want to author the front page write up, with Dr. Evil. :P
.
We're at http://drupal.org/node/609194... That's about 1000 nodes a day and looks like well need 11 more days to hit the 1/2M mark. Oct 25 will be close, but no cigar.
