Drupal vs BuddyPress as a Social Networking site

yeeloon - January 6, 2009 - 15:02

Hi all,

I just want to gather your honest opinion about creating a social network (community site) + some content (articles writeups) + product stores. Right now, I'm considering if I should develop a social network with features like blogs, activities updates, groups. generic forums, friend / buddylist, privatemsg and other cool modules / plugins that could be added together and fits nicely to fully run as proper social network site. Initially 2 - 3 weeks ago, I was head set to use Drupal (D6) to start constructing and "gluing" the bits and pieces of the site together.

But, only just now did I realized that I was having difficulty especially in future upgrades of modules and the maintainability of some of those modules (if gets left out or no longer supported).

So, let's start from the current Drupal 6 version and beyond.

Some modules needed are:
- Blog
- OG
- PrivateMsg - Not ready
- BuddyList / Friendlist - Not ready
- Activty - Not ready
- CCK
- Views
- Panels
- Forum / Adv. Forum
- Content Profile
- LoginToboggan

Others that is non-related (to social networking), but maybe needed for featured article posting and maybe setting some specific profile page for brands / products:
- Fivestar
- Flag
- Events / Calendar - Not ready

Others not found / ready to be deployed:

Chemical Structure Handling?

gareth_w - January 6, 2009 - 12:44

Hi All,

Does anyone have any experience of storing, handling, or editing chemical structure inside of Drupal?

The two formats I am thinking of are SMILES and ISIS draw.

SMILES is directly achievable as it's stored as a text string, and could thus easily go into the database. However, on display a link to a rendering engine would be actually show the structure, rather than the string - so the entry/edit & display would occur in different formats.

ISIS draw is more complex, and generated an encoded character string (not just text I believe). This would need to display in it's own viewer, and the double-click to edit event from this viewer would on return need to update the value stored in the node.

This is probably best done as a CCK content type - does anyone have a shell content type or good (read: easy!) tutorial on how to create one?

Many thanks,
Gareth

Retain existing webpage names? (for SEO)

johnb41 - January 6, 2009 - 06:10

Sorry if this has already been answered, but I just can't find the answer anywhere...

I'd like to bring over my companies current static .html site, and I know it's possible from reading lots of posts here. But my question is... is it possible to retain the exact file names that we currently have? So www.mycompany.com/products.html will still be that exact URL when on Drupal. We're placed very well in search engines, and we don't want to lose our ranking.

I know I can used "redirecting" techniques (301?), but the boss is paranoid and would rather retain the same filename instead of doing that.

Thanks for your help!

John

Design question about content types

Optalgin - January 5, 2009 - 23:41

I am porting a web application into drupal
In my application's scheme I have events, participants and items

[event] <-- [item] --> [participant]

event:       eid, date, location ...
participant: pid, name, status ... (drupal uid to connect a player with user)
item:        eid, pid, data...

in my add event page I have a form; something like

    date: [....]
location: [....]

participant 1: [....]
participant 2: [....]
participant 3: [....]
...

* view page is similar

In the current implementation I have a table for each with minimal data store in database

I'm looking for the best way to port this model into drupal and thinking about
creating content types and using using CCK.

I have developed some drupal modules before but never had to go deep into CCK and views
and will appreciate your experience

  • Is this the right way or am I just making things complicated without reason?
  • Can I consider participant a content?
  • Non have titles.. the body can be used for participant details maybe?
  • Will it store much more data in the database ? (memory/space/performance)
  • Will it give me better flexibility to extend the content in the future
  • Do I have to do it if I want to use the power of views?

I hope this is not a dumb question.. consider me as a CCK & views newbie :-)
