Drupal 6.13 and 5.19, maintenance releases fixing problems reported using the bug tracking system, as well as critical security vulnerabilities, are now available for download. Both releases fix some other smaller issues as well.

Upgrading your existing Drupal 5 and 6 sites is strongly recommended. There are no new features in these releases. For more information about the Drupal 6.x release series, consult the Drupal 6.0 release announcement, more information on the 5.x releases can be found in Drupal 5.0 release announcement.

The first release of the Drupala Installation Profile (5.19-1.0) is available for download:

The Drupala Installation Profile is built on the Drupal 5.x Drigg Installation for social bookmarking and the Advanced Profile Kit for social networking. The site architecture makes extensive use of Views, Panels, and multiple content types to build a portal organized around taxonomy terms that includes blogs, articles, social bookmarks, and user profiles. The Drigg base theme has been redesigned to position featured categories in the primary links section and Drigg categories in the sidebar. This allows for an easy customization of the site structure to support virtually any topic. FCKeditor is pre-installed and configured for WYSIWYG blog & article publishing. The Drupala theme is two columns, optimized for APK & Drigg, and cross-browser tested in FF, IE6, IE7, Chrome, Safari, and Opera.

"Drupal 6: Online Presentation of Data" video series from Lynda.com

Online video provider Lynda.com just released my new six-hour video series, "Drupal 6: Online Presentation of Data". You can check it out with a free one-day pass; it's also available to anyone with a Lynda.com subscription, which starts at $25/month.

The course covers calendars, mapping, charting, and preparing data for tabular export, all built on a foundation of CCK and Views. Since Lynda.com's audience is mostly graphic designers, the course also includes clarification about how to plan data structures. Extra bonus: For giggles, check out the Introduction video, which includes some live-action video of the author looking goofy. :)

One wag in IRC questioned the need for such a course. "Presentation of Data?," he said. "Isn't that what Drupal does anyway?" He's right -- in the same way that a car is a tool for going shopping.

But I believe that many people who would benefit from Drupal's data-presentation features simply don't know about them, because their knowledge of it stops at Stories, Pages, users, and blocks. They need a bit more information to make the leap, and could become fierce advocates for Drupal when they see all it can do in this area.

AdaptiveThemes - Crowd Sourcing Drupal Themes

Just a quiet heads up about my new service for designers and Drupal themers. adaptivethemes.com re-launched a few day ago as a commercial theme provider - with a twist - all themes are crowd sourced from designers and ported to Drupal by professional themers. Proceeds of the sale of the themes is spit between the designer and the themer.

The site is open for registration for all, but the actual shop won't go live until August 1st. We're still in process of sorting out Ubercart and building the first round of beautiful themes. We're most certainly aiming for high quality themes (premium) but of course its up to themers and designers to come together to make the magic happen.

So far the response has been pretty solid with regular signups over the past 2 days being spit about 50/50 designers and designer/themers with a couple of hard core themers joining the fray. Really cool thing is I've chatted with most of the new members and about 1/3 have never used Drupal, so that's really good news.

Drupal Aggragator image

Hi i'm new to drupal, the problem that i'm having is that the core drupal aggregator displays images within the source...but it does not when you display it in a block...and what i want is that the block that displays the feed, should display both the title and description with the images on the side of the block. Please help if you can

Apparently, it's for use in Ruby, only, but I was thinking that Ruby, Python, and PHP were pretty close, and therefore I started wondering if anyone in the Drupal world has looked at such.

I have very little experience, to date, of messing with the PHP in Drupal; and even less experience looking at CSS. I want to take the time to do it, but I have so little time, that I often just have to skip all of that.

Anyway, I'd imagine that many people in the Drupal Community would benefit from something along this line (which perhaps someone HAS done something, but I just didn't see it).

Any thoughts from anyone out there?

Hooray, Drupal.org turns 500,000!

One half meeellion nodes...

Someone out there must have noticed that Drupal.org hit its 500,000th node on June 23, 2009. That's a half million drops in the community pool that makes this project so excellent. The lucky winner is seanr with a module release.

It looks like Drupal.org is ramming through about 1000 posts a day. At this rate plus the exponential growth of this community, there is no telling how soon we'll hit that one million mark. We just crossed the 250,000 node mark 14 months ago. I'll make a suggestion that someone start a pool for the date of the one millionth node.

I'll cast the first vote for Sept 25, 2010. Yeah, that's soon, but mark my words.

I'm looking at a fresh new copy of Drupal 5 Views Recipes. I wrote it, and I'm thrilled to see it in print.

SiteHound 2.13 has been released. Besides module updates and multiple profile and typography improvements, it also has a simple extractor that allows one to upload the archive to the FTP and the run extract.php to extract it.

Recovery.gov is due for a makeover

On June 12, 2008 the US Government's General Services Administration issued a presolicitation to overhaul Recovery.gov, which happens to use Drupal. This is the federal Web site dedicated to tracking stimulus spending. Request for proposals are expected to be released on Monday June 15, 2009. Apparently only vendors on GSA's Alliant contract will be eligible to submit proposals according to an article by Nextgov at http://www.nextgov.com/nextgov/ng_20090612_5596.php.

Recovery.gov is a Drupal site that received a great deal of fanfare when it was launched in 2007. Now the word is that so far, watchdogs, open government advocates and lawmakers have been underwhelmed with the content and capability of Recovery.gov. Details about the highly awaited solicitation are scant, but the Recovery Board wants to change not only the site's look but also its core focus.

For the last few months myself and quite a few community members have been working on a larger vision for our beloved Drupal documentation. It has taken quite a bit longer than I had hoped, but I want to put out a draft of an initial "roadmap" for documentation that outlines our bigger issues and an approach to tackling them. I've attached a document which has everything we've hammered out so far in a 10 page document along with three appendices. This post is just a short summary of what is in that document and to let people know that we are gearing up to kick things off and really make Drupal documentation rock.

For starters, we've spent a lot of time identifying problem areas, prioritizing them and setting out some target dates. When looking at the tasks we need to accomplish we recognized that there are two main areas to focus on: the documentation itself and the community of people that create and maintain it.

Butcher, Winborn Finalists for Packt Author of the Year Award

Packt Publishing is celebrating its fifth year in existence by crowning an author of the year for 2009. All authors releasing a book through Packt in 2008 were eligible for this distinction. Voting was opened to the public and through this process the field was whittled down to six finalists.

The competition has served as a reflection of the quality work being done within the Drupal community. Free High Quality Themes for Drupal

Today I launched a new project that will port hundreds, probably thousands of Joomla, Wordpress and other CMS themes to Drupal.

3rdWorld Themes will become the home of a large repository of free, high quality ported-to-Drupal themes.

The idea has been nearly a year in the making. Phase one was the development of a highly flexible and extensible starter theme called Genesis. I needed a theme I knew like the back of my hand and that I could bend and twist to suit most themes. Unknown to most of you I also built a rather wicked grids based starter-theme but caught a lucky break when Ninesixty came on the scene. I mention these two themes because all the themes at 3rdWorld will be subthemes, either of Genesis or Ninesixty.

UPDATE: I have added both Zen and Blueprint themes as possible base themes for subthemes, this should open it up to more themers and provide some competitive spirit:)

Phase two was amassing a gigantic repo of free and open source themes that were not only free, but beautiful as well. I have around 500 to-be-ported at the moment but believe me when I tell you there are thousands, possibly in the realm of 3000+.
